Yahoo! Messenger for Mac Beta Released

At last! :-)

i want desktop search (that can search thunderbird, which spotlight cannot).

I was super excited to get the new Messenger for Mac on my machine... the previous years have been painful to say the least, having to finally give up and start using Adium.

Anyway, I installed it, and I was confronted with some bubbly, bulky (in appearnce) app that would make a Japanese schoolgirl jump with joy.

They really need to get a different skin on there to make it more compact. The contact list is too big, so mucg space between each contact... if you have 100 or so contacts, you'll be scrolling for an eternity!

Don't even get me started on the messaging window... it's like iChat gone horribly wrong. Speech bubbles are so 3 years ago! Plus again the spacing issue really lets it down.

All in all it's great for the visually impaired, but for people who use it every day for work and pleasure, it's a real let down.

I'm glad they got a new version out to get it closer to the current PC release, but I just hope they make it into a usable app.

Oddly, I found out about the beta from Flickr photos and not from my old messenger or any Yahoo tool I use (My.Yahoo or Yahoo homepage).

I am glad the Mac is finally getting attention and really hope the Mac Y! Messenger gets close to the Windows version, which I have loaded and find quite helpful.

I am not so bummed with the Mac app as I know it is in Beta, but I am looking for forums, FAQ, or community pages around the app. iSight does not get noticed as a webcam and where to make modifications to the app needs to simple documentation. Does this exist somewhere? All I find when I click away to "find out more" is the Windows app pages, which is quite wrong.

I'm going a little bit off track here.

But could you tell me why the Messenger Version 8 Beta for Windows tries to connect to a-as-us.falkag.net [212.23.32.39] from its temp folder during the installation process?

It's very exciting to see the new Mac Messenger. It's a leap in the right direction. My main issue is no tabs. 4 separate windows all with active chats drives me crazy. Get tabs and it'll be even better.

What is the official place to put feedback about this? For now I'll just comment here and that the right people read here.

I was especially excited about the video support. But when trying to communicate with a contact in Windows we didn't get it to work. Is there a known problem or can I help with debugging this?

Anyone else see this problem? I don't know if this is related or not, but after I installed Yahoo! Messenger 3.0 beta, my browsers no longer remember my My Yahoo settings. I have to sign in every time. This is only a problem with My Yahoo and not with any other web site, and it happened on the same day that Messenger was installed, and has been happening ever since. :-(

I downloaded the beta for Windows and with it I got the "Yahoo! Toolbar" for IE. The problem is, I can't disable the Yahoo! Toolbar. Every time I uncheck the "Yahoo! Toolbar" from my IE, close all IE's that I have open and then when I re-open IE the "Yahoo! Toolbar is back"!! I can't seem to get it not display. If you have any suggestion or who I can get in touch with at Yahoo! to look into this that would be great. Yes, I know this is beta but hey, I am trying to help.

I think that's excellent. I work a lot with music and film. As you probably already know Mac tends to be the platform of choice for both. Plugging straight into messenger is always a good option for quick edit decisions etc. It's all the better to able to do it from one machine!

While it's nice that they've finally updated messenger, it really just catches them up to Adium. Furthermore Yahoo has strides to make in making their property more mac compatible - Launchcast and video content currently don't work on Macs. I wonder all the time why I support a site that dismisses me?

I installed the new yahoo messenger but found out that now there is no way to save chats? I can't find how to save conversations. Anybody knows how to do it?

voice - can we please get voice??
It's a little painful to do video conf calls with my inlaws (stuck in Windows) and need Skype for voice and YIM for the video..

Help. I just loaded the new Yahoo! messenger beta version for my MacBook Pro, and although I can finally view my family, I can't HEAR them. What do I need to enable to be able to have voice as well as video. Help!

Well, I down-loaded the Yahoo Beta the other day, and my Titanium G4 (ok, graphic designer here, no need to upgrade until Adobe does) took a Kernel Panic to the Nth degree....it's the only thing my "guys" can think of...they replaced the RAM, trashed the old Yahoo IM, but it's still causing me problems...I don't recommend downloading this far-inferior IM program until they answer to their issues with non-intel-based MACs....I know how to fix my stuff, and only go to the big guns when all else fails, and after two trips back with issues, THEY can't even figure out what is going on....$500+ in priority service fees later, I'll be lucky if I get my life back by Monday. YAHOO BETA was the last thing I installed before my kernel panic....I don't trust ANYTHING Yahoo puts out there anymore.

Oh, and as a side - for the 1/2 hour I had the honor of using the "new-and-improved-app", I felt the G-force of "TWO-STEPS-BACK" from the previous- just running fine-version previously installed. The biggest MINUS....I can't easily archive IM conversations as text like I could in the antiquated, but functioning verision from before!!!!!

No way to save conversations other than copy and paste.

Why in the world would they release a beta version with absolutely no provision to save conversations. I wonder if Yahoo is even aware of this.

Well. The emoticons are nice. The word balloons are annoying. The inability to save conversations makes this absolutely useless. I refuse to cut and paste when I can just use another IM program, or a previous version.

Voice support for the Mac please! Even libgaim (which is what Adium uses) is not up and cracking on this. :-(

I downloaded the new Beta version onto my MacBook Pro but it was very unstable and most of the time I could not send or recieve messages, it seemed to freeze, so have sent it into the trash and am back to using the old version which is annoying as I did like the moving emotions but was not keen on the bubbles.
Has anyone else encountered this problem is it worth loading it again??

Why no "Voice capability" for Mac?? If it can't do voice... well what's the point of it? That's like buying a TV with captions but no sound. And how is this product "worth the wait" if it can't even do something as fundamental as transmit sound? And why no mention of it in the products documentation? All is forgiven if Yahoo fixes this most serious omission.

I have downloaded the yahoo messenger for mac beta version. But I can't get the dmg file to do anything. Just looks like it worked but nothing mounts. Am I missing something? What do I do step by step after the download process. When I go to download, it only gives me the option of saving it. Please help, I need to talk to my gf and 2.5.3 doesn't work the webcam anymore. Thanks

I have a question regarding this new version of Messenger for Mac. Can I archive my conversations? How can I do that and how can I read my archive conversations? If not, how can I do all the above on a previous version, as S. MacLoad said? I'm asking all this because I am a recent user of Mac.

Regarding the upgraded beta IM messenger upgrade for MAC
I don't like it and use the old one instead...why aren't the little animated comments there??? sheeesh so long a wait for so little in improvement. Also I love my door knock and door closing sounds...also the shattering glass when someone answers me...the new sounds are too low and I cannot hear them...also I don't particularly find them interesting... bring back the good things of the old Messenger and let's really upgrade Messenger to the level that Windows is...it has been much too long and it is lousy that Yahoo with all it's resources has not done it yet. Also some things are not easy to find...why can't i change my font easily ...you hid so many things that are right there in the old version? I won't use the new one until things change for the better! Very disappointing Yahoo! So much good about the old is missing in the new and what is interesting in the newer Windows version is missing as well.... very lame!

So if I get Parallels on my Macbook Pro, can I use the windows yahoo then? I hate yahoo for Mac

I suddenly cannot see others cam on my Yahoo Messenger. I have 3.0 Beta and am using it on my 10.4.8.

Any suggestions. I was able to view others webcams until yesterday and suddenly when they invite, I hear the invitation sound, but no webcam comes on.

I'm really disappointed in this version of yahoo for MAC. Everything is a chore to find with no proper help page and no voice!

Has anyone tried using Messenger with either Parallels or Boot Camp?

All of a sudden the chat conversation toolbar is GONE.

So now I am unable to invite people to use my webcam at all since there is no other access to it except from the toolbar which is now GONE. I have been using it for 2 months now but as of this morning it mysteriously went into limbo.

Anybody know anything about this?

I'm on a G4 and I cannot get the beta version to work at all. It won't allow me to add contacts. It repeatedly asks if I want to add the same contacts. It won't let me delete contacts. I've attempted to reload it a bunch of times. Major disappointment, because it looked like a terrific improvement at first.

How do I get photoshare to work??? It doesn't work! Mac 10.4.8 here...I can't see photos sent to me...I can't send photos...I can't save contacts....

The new Yahoo is good! I'm glad they have got a new one. But the Voice Chat is still not on it, which the Windows version has had for a long time. But over all this new version is better than the last.

YM Beta 3.0 for Mac is quite good..
but i am very dissapointed that it does not support voice chat like the PC version..

And the webcam feature is not stable..
When i log in, at first my friends can see my webcam...
But then a few minutes later.. the video stream is gone eventhough i didn't change any settings nor turn off my iSight camera.

Please repair this problem...

It will be great to use YM like the PC version on my Mac..
Now i use my Mac more often than my PC because of its stability.

The old version of yahoo messenger, I was able to zoom my friends cam. Is there a new version out for i-mac so I can do that again?

I found out a way to save your conversations. It's pretty cheap and isn't exactly what I want, but it works...for now. While in your conversation, go to File > Print, and when the Print box opens, click on the PDF button w/ the triangle beside it and choose "Save as PDF". I know it bites, but it's the best there is for now. Let me know if anyone finds a better option.

I a using the new Y Messenger (beta) on the Mac and want to delete sign-in names on the initial sign-in window. Anyone knows how to delete the names or change the settings so that the names are not remembered. thx.

With no automatic archive, this version of YM goes right in the trash. Back to Fire or Adium. Slick graphics only does so far.

I was astounded that Yahoo would bother releasing a Video chat feature without sound/voice. I was helping my father-in-law install the new Yahoo client on a Mac (he's a recent retiree and convert to Mac) and I kept telling him that "mute" must be checked somewhere, because it doesn't make any sense to have video without voice. I did a search in Yahoo (found nothing in the Yahoo features or documentation), but only when searching the user comments did I find any mention of Voice or lack there of on a Mac. I can't wait for the new, new, beta with voice. Those "talkies" movies have been around for a while now in iChat. If we weren't trying to communicate with people in other countries who don't have the luxury of Macs and for some reason they also chose Yahoo over AIM - then I just wouldn't even care. Does anyone know of a Mac chat client that has voice and is compatible with Yahoo. Maybe we should ask Apple to add compatibility between iChat and Yahoo (like they have with AIM) - it might be faster?

I downloaded the new messenger today. However I can't get the .dmg file to do anything. It looks like it downloaded fine but it never launches. I know someone asked this question before...can someone give me some advice on how to do this. Thanks!!!

when i click into my yahoo messenger on my MacBook Pro it comes on then pops off. can anyone help me with that? i was very disappointed after i purchased my mac when i found out that yahoo messenger did not have voice. very disappointed. i would not have bought it if i knew.

Yahoo! Messenger for Mac has video (webcam) but no voice or audio? That makes no sense at all. I was trying to chat with my dad, who has a Y! ID but not Skype (what I usually use), so we both downloaded and installed Y!M. We searched for enabling voice for a long time, but I quickly learned that the Mac client simply doesn't support it. Highly disappointing, especially since this is supposed to be "new".

It's ridiculous that Y!M comes with video but no voice. We Mac users are still forced to live in the Dark Ages...

I have an iBook G3, and it seems that the latest versions of Skype, Y!M, etc. are only supported by G4 and above. I've been using Skype, but the audio is not good and anytime I try video it crashes. Any suggestions?

I just start using YIM MAC version. How come there is no voice support? And I would also like to know why the Live Messanger (MSN) also hasn't got any voice and video support as well? If the company have delivered a version for MAC why they don't give out the same configuration as they do for Window OS? Any one could help? It's difficult to tell my mum how to open the skype with YIM at the same time.
Anyone could help? I can't explain to my mum through email how to work out all these gigets.

Sorry to say but this is hit or miss for me. On occasion it will launch completely, while other times it will stay in a perpetual loop with the little churning gear icon thingy, and it wont get further than that. Launching the app from terminal gives me some nice gritty errors, enough to make an end-user scream in fright. But meh, I know this isnt a bug forum, so I'll save the details for them.

BTW this is not an old build, nor is it an unstable one.

I want to know why there is no photo share. I use this ALL the time because we are a military family and use it with the family back home on a weekly basis! I have to use my PC for this. Its the only reason I use it now. I giant photosharing machine. I thought having a Mac was superior to PC? Guess not.

I recently downloaded the new MAC 3 Beta to replace an old version that Yahoo says is no longer supported. The new version refuses to allow me to sign on, and I have tried everything that the Tech support people have suggested. Their final suggestion that I am reluctant to perform without some assurance that it will be successful, is to disable my Virus protection and any firewalls. When I told the email Tech this, I received a snotty answer from "Kyle" that if I didn't wish to comply with instructions, I would just have to live without Messenger.

WT*!!!! I just switch to MAC today and it's such a pain in the a**! esp the YM. Why can't YM do something about it? Why can't they provide everything that PC YM is enjoying. It's so frustrating. I can't even find the buzz button, no photosharing and the cam always stops although it says 1 viewer. There's gotta be something that MAC and YM can do! Please, YM is very important! Pls do soemthing! Thank you.
