Am I a bad person if I say "yes, you're on crack, but only because you're still working somewhere that has obviously lost touch with the present 'pulse' of the net" ? ;-)

I agree with your premise and in the notion that cross-blog technologies such as Trackback are key. I do find the comments feature lacking, however, in that it really is designed for serial add-on communication by a variety of people to a single post and not an additional collaboration as you will often see in comments. I think this problem can be resolved via a decent threading implemention of comments, something so obvious I'm sure it's been done and I'm just not aware...

snide remarks aside, weblogs (even though I'm keeping one) are a fad, and I've encountered several lately that have been abandoned due to the strain placed on the blogger. A good, threaded messaging system will alway be needed for real discourse. I think blogs are great and will never go away (so, maybe “fad” isn't the right word), but we'll have to keep working on way to tie them to the messaging systems we use for them to be really useful.

The five years I worked as an engineer showed me that our weakest link is communication, and blogs won't solve that problem. Most bloggers use their blogs as soap boxes. No dialog occurs. Even many comments attached to MT sites are just rocks tossed through a small opening.

I think blogs are a great supplemental resource, but they aren't communication.

I don't agree with you on this one.. Blogs require quite a bit more work and don't offer the immediate gratification of bulletin boards, as readership has to be built up..

While there may be a weblog boom.. a lot of it will eventually thin out and only a smaller percentage of people will actually continue maintaining both content and readership.

Forums are about immediate interaction and blogs are more about self-expression. Two different mediums.

I believe that people currently blogging or at least reading blogs have a more difficult time seeing the application of a blog to a business setting because they rightfully compare it to their current experience. A blog is a tool and applied in the correct way can be extremely useful.

I'll concede that neither of us have any idea of what the future holds, and it's unfair to totally trash (or really even evangalize) any technology before it gets a fair chance. There are more than enough people who use IRC channels as their means of support to show that different folks prefer different methods of communication and data retention.

You can see this "happen" in Drupal; forum topics and blog entries can coexist. The main difference is they way they are being rendered based on the context they are shown in, not the underlying datastructure.

On the main page of drupal.org you can actually see forum topics that have been promoted to the front page. They look like normal blog entries, don't they?
