"Prout Table. What's that?" - Anonymous
Well, lots of people (who don' t know this story and aren't actually anonymous) have wondered what Prout Table is. When asked, we usually say, "It's our group of friends at school" or something to that effect. They may respond, "Why are your friends named after a table?" Funny they should ask--that's where is gets interesting.
We didn't set out to name ourselves. In fact, it's not clear that there ever was a need to collectively name our group--but that didn't stop us. To the best of anyone's knowledge, the name Prout Table came about as one of those things that someone says and just sort of "sticks."
Why someone would have even thought to refer to "us" as Prout Table is less of a struggle to understand once you know about our daily lunch gatherings.
Come to think of it, having a name for ourselves made it really easy to decide on a name for our electronic mailing list. The current thinking is the day that our mailing list was created is the day we formalized ourselves as Prout Table. Earlier references to ourselves were usually shortened to simply Prout. ;-)
