cover How can some people not appreciate the sheer comic brilliance of the excellent Adam Sandler film Happy Gilmore? I just happened to see it on TV last night (yeay for Tivo) and the program guide had two stars next to the movie title.

Un-freaking-believable.

Heck, even Amazon users have given it over 4 stars! Now that I think of it, I don't yet have it on DVD. It's probably time to rectify that oversight, wouldn't you say?

I saw parts of HG and thought they were pretty funny, but for the most part I think Sandler's films are unbelievably fucking stupid, and each is pretty much boring as shit BECAUSE THEY'RE PRETTY MUCH ALL THE FUCKING SAME!

His best work was during SNL.

Sigh, his best work was his first movie, Shakes the Clown, now THAT is a great movie. The best mime vs. clown fight ever I tell you!

Adam Sandler is a damp squip over here in the UK - his humour doesnt travel. I think it went downhill for him over here when he came out with that film "Waterboy" - made him look like a total asshole.

And most English people think he IS an asshole after that "Waterboy" film.

Me included.

I've got the blog and you don't, so YOU WILL LISTEN TO EVERY FUCKING WORD I HAVE TO SAY!

(which movie was that from?)

Waterboy was a flop here in the US, too. I bought an Adam Sandler DVD collection several years ago that included Waterboy, Happy Gilmore, and Billy Madison. To this day, I've probably only watched Waterboy once.

The Wedding Singer

That's his other good movie. As far as I can tell, all the others suck.

Happy Gilmore is classic. Wedding Singer is also pretty good. Shakes the clown is beyond horrible. I can't believe anyone likes that movie.

IMHO Airheads was a wonderful movie, but many have pointed out that it isn't a Sandler move os much as just a movie he was in.

Ah. I think it was "... every damn word ..." though.

Sandler's movies are kind of therapeutic for indulging your mean streak.

SNL has pretty much sucked ass since the days of Sandler, Hartman, Farley, Spade and Co.

Akroyd, Belushi, Radner, Morris and Murphy. Now THAT was SNL...

Sometimes a good guest host can make SNL worth watching again - like Jim Carey.

Let's no overlook Billy Madison's brilliance:

* Steve Buschemi as the lipstick-donning homocidal maniac
* Sandler's drunken hallucinations involving penguins
* Norm MacDonald's presence
* O'Doyle rules!

i'm going to venture a guess that those two stars were assigned at the hands of a critic who probably didn't see much "great" in Sandler acting like a sociopathic mental defective with jokes that have been played out time and again. i'm assuming it got the extra star for the whole Bob Barker bit, which was pretty clever.

btw, i think it's a pretty funny mindless comedy, but i have no illusions about it's greatness. it's for those days when i'd rather drink Pabst than Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale...

Billy Madison is his best.

And I thought "Going Overboard" was his first film.

Remember when he was Theo Huxtable's friend on the Cosby Show?

I think Adam Sandler is the best at creating comedy's, they are kind of mindless but they do go down for a good days movie watching. I think anyone who doesn't like his movies should die
