While reading the bio I posted earlier, Scott asked why I wanted to get a commercial license. Do I plan to try making money by flying gliders? No, not really.

Hi there,

Not many replies on this thread I see. Because most questions on here seem to overlap I will attempt answering them to the best of my ability. I am final year Mechanical/Aerospace engineering student (UQ, Australia) and currently hold a GFPT. Studying taking up most of my time, flying is only recreational at the moment.

Now, like most of you, I have been looking into commercial flying and various paths to make it into the big Airlines. Basically I found there was 3 different approaches which probably won't guarantee you Airline work, but then again by persevering you will determine how far you get in the industry. Here's how you may go about it:

1) Air Force Cadets
2) Airline Cadet Programs
3) Self-funded

The following information regarding these 3 options is purely based on the information I obtained from FTO's here in Aus and various websites. I stand to be corrected.

Like the majority of people on here, the funding of their flight training is most probably the biggest obstacle and applying for loans of up to $100,000 is the last thing we want to get involved with when turning 18 in a few months. That is where option 1 (Air Force Cadets) becomes the obvious choice.

I am not exactly sure on the details of this path; however the training is fully funded and as a cadet you will build up a lot of hours which will later be extremely benefical when applying for the airlines. The recuiting process might require you to have done some more advanced Maths such as calculus, trig, etc, physics..and of course pass the medical test.

Another possibility for fully-funded flight training, is applying for Airline Cadet Programs. These are extremely selective and airlines will only take the very best. Due to an expected shortage of pilots, the following Airlines are now recruiting Cadets:

- Qantas
- Regional Express (Australia)
- Air France
- Malaysia Airline
- Singapore Airline
- EasyJet

The selection process comprises of:

- Psychometric tests
- Interviews
- Group interviews observed by psychologists/pilots
- Maths, Logic and Spatial evaluations

No need to mention that hundreds (if not thousands) of people apply for these programs and only about 50 are offered fully funded training and employment upon completion.

Last, but not least. The self-funded approach. The one we all dread. From the figures I collected it looks as though you can get yourself a CPL(A)+ IR + Frozen ATPL for about AU$60K. You will THEN need to build up some experience which most pilots do either by getting a class 1 instructor rating or by applying for regional airlines which require less hours as PIC.

So far, that is all the info I could dig up in my quest to becoming a pilot. Wish you guys all the best.

Hi there Anand,

The answer to your questions will vary depending on where you get your training from what I've gathered:

1. Europe offers quality training and it has been mentionned that Europe and Asia will be booming in the upcoming years in terms of pilot shortage, increase in fleet number, etc. Catch is, if you obtained your license in a country that is not under the JAA you will have to convert your license if you ever want to fly for the European Airlines.

That being said (and as patriotic as this may sound) Australian Flight schools do cater for a lot of indian students and offers great weather all year round. So you're bound to get a LOT of hours.

Check this site: http://www.australianwingsacademy.com

2. In terms of fees, you're gonna cop it either way. I know that for a CPL here in on the Gold Coast (and Brisbane for that matter) you can expect to pay around AU$55,000, thats assuming you do not require extra hours and have not failed anything along the way.

3. Pre-flight training is done at the FTO itself. They run you through a briefing and cover the theoretical module of the course.

4. I'm guessing that's a typo ;)

5. (See 2). I know that you will gather somewhere around 250hrs upon completing of the CPL. However depending on what you are aiming to do, you may require ratings such as Instrument Rating, Multi-Engine Rating, Night Rating, etc. As I'm sure you are aware, to apply for the big airlines you will need to log at least 1000hrs. Most people do this by obtaining an Instructor Rating, helps people recover from the huge debt ;)

6. I'm sure if you spend time googling this, you will find there are a LOT of institutes that offer training. They all boil down to the same thing at the end of the day. Some might use different aircrafts, less crowded aerodromes but you end up with a CPL and thats all the employer wants to know.

However Cadetship program (funded training) have just about dried up. But airlines such as QANTAS, REX, British Airways, Air France, Ryan Air, etc.. are still recruiting every now and then. (Read my previous post for more details on this)

7. I know that a school here in Australia called jetFlite guarantees employment upon completion. BUT they put you on metro routes and its not much fun. You fly miners to remote areas for a long time until you have enough hours to move on to bigger things. That being said, getting employment with JUST a CPL is hard enough so it might be worth looking into.

There is also a school in Toulouse, France called ENAC (Ecole Nationale de L'Aviation Civil) which has shown graduates getting employed by Air France with an 85% succes rate. Still not 100% though is it ;)

8. I haven't looked too much into Aviation in India, but I will bet any money that you won't have any problem finding a job with the pilot shortage currently hitting Asia. In fact I dont recall which domestic airline in india does this, but they will put you on A320 with a ridiculously low amount of hours. Also by getting A320 or B737 ratings and such, I'm almost certain you can get walk-in interviews in some indian airlines.

hope that helped,
Good luck Anand :)

People, really think hard about why you want to become airline pilots. I know you love flying. But you don't get to experience the freedom of flying when the flight director tells you what to do. You're constantly in hotels away from home, away from family and friends. It's hard, it's not fun and games. It's work that takes a serious toll on many other things that are important in life. Airlines go out of business, the price of oil keeps climbing higher, and airplanes keep getting more automated and idiot-proof.
Flying is great, but you can rent airplanes. Think about it.

Hey, it's nice how you take time to answer people's questions...

1. To get a commercial pilot license is a college degree required? Can they just go to the commercial flight school instead and complete the hours?

2. Well since this is a little off topic, it's up to you if you want to answer or not. To get an ATP license, is a college degree required or can the pilot just go to an ATP flight school?

3. Does a commercial pilot (or any pilot) need a specific college degree, such as one in aviation, if necessary. If they don't please leave this blank

4. This might seem kind of stupid but would a CPL flight school count as a college to become a commercial pilot? If not, why so?

Well, I actually have a few more questions, but I will have to wait for answers.

i am planning to do my cpl in india. The total flying hours shall be around 200-225hr. But to get some job in an airlines you need to have atleast 1000 hrs. I understand that there is a chance to built flying hours by becoming an instructor.but every body can not get the oppertunity to become a flight instructor. Is there any other way to built the flying hours while being paid, like some pvt. jobs with flying clubs etc.

Hi
I am 16 years old from Nepal.I'm doing +2 level. I want o become a pilot in future. I don't know about pilot courses and any colleges as my country is not so good at it and there are no good colleges too. So I have planned to go to Singapore or Malasia for the furthur studies and my family memebers are counting on me. I consulted with my friends who are in other countries about pilot courses and they adviced me to join aeronautical engeenering. Now I'm confused whether to join aeronautical engeenering or to do something else. So please give me some advice and my answers so that I can achieve my goal. Looking forward for your answers.THANK YOU
