I was psyched when Dan passed me a link to this Yahoo! News story. After all, the title is "Sixteen Candles," 16 Years Later.

It begins:

Pull out the yearbooks, throw on the varsity letter jackets--it's high school reunion time for the gang from the 1984 John Hughes comedy. 32 Candles will update the lives of Sam Baker, Farmer Ted, Long Duk Dong and the rest of the gang.

"Holy Crap!" I thought, "This will be a big hit at the box office."

But then I read on:

The original film was based around Samantha Baker's (Molly Ringwald) 16th birthday, a day that went unobserved by her family. The made-for-television special will pick up the story around Sam's 32nd birthday.

What the fuck?!

I had to re-read that few times to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

A made-for-television special?

What kind of way is that to treat fans of the great 80s John Hughes movies?

I can't believe this.

Please let it be a sick joke.

What next? An after school special remake of The Breakfast Club? A Saturday morning cartoon based on Pretty in Pink?

Oh good, I have an excuse to tell a stupid story from the old days when I was in computer sales.

One day way back in the 1980s I was at work at my computer sales job in Studio City, we were known as "the computer store to the stars" since we handled Universal Studios and almost everybody else of significance. So I suddenly get a call from John Hughes, who I had never heard of. He wants to buy an IBM PC, but he's got a huge problem, all his screenplay drafts are on 8in floppies, written on IBM Displaywriters, like all the Universal steno pool uses. Well, Universal was my account, so I knew there was an "IBM Displaywriter conversion kit" which was an 8in drive and some software to convert the data files to PC Displaywriter format, I was interested in this deal just due to the technical challenge. But I'd never sold a DW conversion kit before and we didn't have it in stock. So I made a few calls, got the info, and called him back with a quote. He said great, he needed this ASAP, I told him the extra kit would take about a week to arrive, and it was a special order so I'd need a small deposit or a purchase order (standard practice). He said no problem, he'd send his secretary right over with a check so he could skip any delays with cutting a purchase order.
So.. about 30 minutes later, Ms. Secretary comes over bearing the check. I wrote up the sales ticket (we still used handwritten invoices) and asked her to sign at the bottom. Suddenly, with no provocation, she started SCREAMING at me about how she HATED how computers were sold, and she just didn't like any of this process, and she refused to sign. I told her I'd already negotiated this deal directly with her boss, and would she PLEASE sign this invoice so he could get his computer? She just stood there screaming about how she hated computers and computer salesmen specifically. So I called John Hughes up, told him his secretary was freaking out and causing a scene in our store, she refused to sign his order, so could he please speak to her? So she proceeded to yell at HIM over the phone for a few minutes, and then hung up. She said, "he'll be right over." In about 5 minutes, John Hughes came into the store, asked me where to sign, and told the secretary to hand over the check. I told him I'd have the machine ready tomorrow, and I'd phone him when the additional kit came in. The secretary stomped out of the store right after him. I delivered everything exactly as promised, Hughes loved it.

What I didn't know at that time was that Hughes had just signed the multi-picture deal that made him the most powerful screenwriter in Hollywood, and the PC I sold him was used to finish all those scripts. And here he was having to waste his time coming into my shop personally because he had a bitchy secretary. What I ALSO didn't know at that time was that the Universal steno pool was in the middle of a revolt, they didn't want to convert to PCs, they preferred the dedicated word processors they'd used for years, and were doing everything they could to stop their bosses from buying PCs. Within a couple of years, there was no more steno pool at Universal, all the writers typed their own scripts, with a few secretaries who did the final formatting with Scriptor and a few other specialized products.

So anyway, there is my minor part in delivering Hughes' work to the screen, for good or ill.

I thought it was a great idea to bring back 16 candles. I loved this movie it is what every girl goes through, but Jake would have to come back also so that they could stay together, because that was the point of 16 candles that a original person got to stay with a popular boy of her dreams, and if it doesen't work out it ruines the whole thing. It is a great idea but make it work out buy getting them married at the end so that every 16 year old fantasy can continue.

Okay so here it is what is suppose to happen, Sam wonder's back to her old neighborhood and is in parol since she tagged along with Jake at college, now no words on if the original Jake is back but you can bet the Donger will be since he has had loads of acting since then and he also made a appearence on VH1 about it. So Molly returns home, and tries to find her true self beyond.....blah blah blah blah. And lovely farmer ted is now in charge of a big internet company thing and little secret....one of his partners is none other than John C.! Which of course means his sister is back in the movie as well. If no one knew this before this is where both siblings had their first movie together. Which is probably why they signed. The Donger now lives with Sam's grandparents permatately and is supposely working at a type of hamburger joint kind of place. Okay no more peep's out of me. I will just leave you with, did you ever wonder what happened with Sam's sister Jenny and if her..hmm....grotesque newlywed ever work out?
