Jeremy's Rain Pictures

It rained really hard on May 3rd, 1998. It was the first hard rain in my new house, so I took some pictures of all the water. The street I live on became a fast flowing river, and my back and front yards became mini-lakes. The rain didn't last long, but it fell really hard. We even got some hail

All of these pictures were taken during the rain, either from inside my house (by propping doors open - doors which you'll see in some of them) or outside (thanks to my big umbrella). The little bright dots in some of the outdoor pictures are either rain drops or hail that were very close to the camera and happened to get caught by the flash.

The Pictures

All of the thumbnails shown here are links to larger versions of the image. The larger versions have been sized to be viewable on a 640x480 display (or larger).

You can sort-of tell, but the bricks which makeup the sidewalk that goes through my cute white picket fence are underwater! There was about 2 inches of water covering them. This fell in roughly 45 minutes.

ss-front-yard-from-garage-zoom.jpg (9579 bytes)
This shot was taken from just inside the garage. You can see the water collecting in my front yard, my submerged sidewalk, and the little woodchips which are floating away from my flower beds (which don't contain any flowers - maybe next year).

ss-front-yard-seen-from-garage.jpg (9947 bytes)
This is basically the same shot as above, except that I zoomed out to provide some more prespective - and more water.

ss-hail-in-back-yard.jpg (11702 bytes)
I said we got hail, right? We got lots of hail. You're looking at what collected on my back deck in about 30 minutes. Of course, it is blown out of proportion a bit, given that this is everything that fell off the back 1/2 of my roof.

ss-hail-on-back-porch.jpg (13707 bytes)
A shot of the same hail, taken from my laundy room.

Another shot out the laundry room door. This gives you a bit of depth. Maybe you can see all the water collecting in my "UFO landing site" (there used to be a round swimming pool there, now it looks as it a UFO had landed there).

ss-house-from-driveway.jpg (12906 bytes)
Under protective umbrella cover, I went out into the hail to take picture of the house and front yard from the driveway. That little river of water in my front yard was flowing very quickly into the street, which I nicknamed "The River Jennifer."

ss-my-own-lake-front-yard.jpg (8981 bytes)
A picture of roughly the same area, taken from inside the house and looking out the front door. Notice how the water gathers around the front of my house and stays there.

ss-street-from-driveway.jpg (10131 bytes)
On the driveway again, here is a shot of The River Jennifer. Notice how there is a little swirl of water at the end of my driveway.

ss-the-river-jennifer.jpg (8248 bytes)
The River Jennifer, as seen from my front door.

ss-the-river-runs-through-it.jpg (10335 bytes)
Once again, a shot of the little tributary of The River Jennifer, which spontaneously formed to run through my front lawn and drain into the street. How cute.

ss-water-collects-in-the-landing-site.jpg (10866 bytes)
Water collects in the previously mentioned UFO Landing Site. :-)

ss-water-pools-at-my-driveway.jpg (10253 bytes)
Back in the garage, you can see where the water flows from my front yard and into The River Jennifer. You might be able to see the pooling of water where the two meet.

ss-water-runs-over-driveway.jpg (9951 bytes)
The same shot (basically) but from a slightly different angle. I don't know why I took two.
