CGI Scripts on WCNet

Introduction

We currently do not allow WCNet users to create and use their own custom CGI scripts (counters, guest books, etc.) because of the potential negative impact such scripts can have on both the performance, stability, and security of our web server. However, we have tried to supply some standard scripts that any subscriber can use in conjunction with his/her home page.

Standard CGI Scripts

What follows are brief descriptions of what is currently available. Links have been provided to more in-depth documentation for each of the items mentioned. If you have questions which are not answered in the material presented here, please feel free to e-mail the WCNet web server administrator at www@wcnet.org.

Hit Counter

A "hit counter" or simply a "counter" is a graphic which displays the approximate number of visitors to a given web page (or group of pages). They are fading in popularity on high-profile web sites but are still quite common on personal home pages.

MailMerge (used for Guest Books and Feedback Forms)

MailMerge is a program which allows you to put a form on your web page (like a Feedback Form, or maybe a Guestbook), collect what the user types, and then e-mail the results somewhere. It is called MailMerge because the process of setting it up is similar to that of creating a mail merge in a word processing programs. You must create a template file which dictates the format of the mail message, and you must supply input (design the web form) to go with it.

Local documentation for MailMerge will be on-line soon.
